Karen Tamasa:
Reaping rewards in her fields of dreams

The sun shineth; the land is green; and the people are strong and creative.
Symbolism of the gold, green and black of the Jamaican Flag

In this blessed and beautiful piece of God's green earth called Jamaica, hope springs eternal in the hardest of times through examples like young Karen Tomasa. Using the sunshine of her 19 years, she has made hay in a big way in the agro-processing and agriculture industry.

Her fields of dreams have been constantly watered by determination and vision beyond her years. Strength and creativity definitely triumph over all in this story of a girl from Esher in rural St. Mary, who has become a national source of pride and inspiration. Already she has racked up an impressive list of awards for her accomplishments and the accolades continue to pour in.

The present scope of her business endeavours include 1,100 chickens, several heads of cattle, cash crops on six hectares of land, a foray into pre-seasoned agro-processing products and natural juices and a store that promotes her brand - Easy Way.

With a calibrated mix of confidence and congeniality, she explained that she is currently in expansion mode and always has her mind fixed on product development and penetrating new markets across the island. Can she really be 19 years old?

The importance of a Handshake

It's safe to say that "associating", "networking", "mixing" or "connecting" with the people we want to do business with is an essential part of achieving financial success. After all, the exchange of goods/services for cash goes down better if some degree of familiarity exists.

On that note, getting familiar with the right people is vitally important, and the way we greet these people can sometimes mean the difference between success and failure. In the business world, the handshake is the accepted initial gesture of greeting. First impressions can be formed from it, and it is always essential to try to leave a good imprint in this regard. Possible future opportunities and benefits often depend of it.

The standard handshake is described as an act in which two people extend an arm and grasp each others' right or left open palm and shake briefly. It is usually accompanied by a verbal greeting. It is a custom that shows attention, confirmation or acknowledgment between individuals or groups of people when they meet. Socially, men are more likely to shake hands than women. In business, it is considered the customary greeting of both sexes.
