Bun
Him!!! - packs no real heat
The
truth is that it isn't likely to win any significant
literary award. It isn't even of the Penthouse
Forum or the good old B-line novel quality. Not
even close. What Macka Diamond's dancehall fiction
Bun Him!!! is, though, is reading material that
comes in handy on a rainy day when you're curled
up in bed.
While this writer is admittedly
a fan of Macka Diamond, her music, fashion sense
and irreverent nature, the truth remains that
this novel falls short of being called good literature.
It packs no real heat, as the writing is extremely
repetitive and saturated with clichés.
Every other page is laced with lyrics from a dancehall
song handed down as pearls of wisdom. It appears
to be the writer's way of 'bigging up' all of
her friends.
The story line follows Sandra,
a 20-something student with a 40-year-old sugar
daddy named Larry who satisfies her materially
but not sexually. Her best friend Tiffany is trying
to steal Larry from her, while an old high school
flame, Calvin, re-enters Sandra's life and lays
the lyrics on thick and the pipe even thicker.
Things come to a bump when Calvin's 'bun' starts
growing in Sandra's oven and he gets tired of
sharing her with Larry. What ensues is betrayal
most foul, murder most heinous and then revenge
most sweet.
