Having signed a one-year contract
to race in the 2006 season of the Formula BMW
USA series with the Gelles Racing Team, 18 year
old Joel Jackson will start on the road to realizing
his dream on May 19, when he tackles the Mid-Ohio
Sports Car Course, in the USA. From then until
September 3, the teenage karter will have a very
busy schedule competing in 14 qualification rounds
at 7 venues across the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Gelles Racing is one of the top teams in Formula
BMW and Champ Car Atlantic in the USA. The Formula
BMW series is BMWs entry level programme
for Formula 1 drivers.
As we chatted about his plans
for the future, Joels quiet manner and easy-going
demeanor seemed to belie the historic significance
of his latest accomplishment. From the Palisadoes
track in Kingston where his karting skills were
honed, the Ardenne High School graduate is poised
to take his career where no other Jamaican has
gone before....

Weve had calls from Embassies
and High Commissions to play games. Weve
had calls from police groups to play games. Weve
had calls from hotels. We have people calling
from all over the place saying, So what
happen, how yu cyaan reach MY community yet. We
not important to you too? We get people
calling and saying, Miss Ive been
buying IGL gas for the last five years and I want
to know if I can get a game on the side

recalls with a hearty chuckle.
Of course the game
of which Sterling speaks is IGLs Curry
Goat Cricket, an IGL adaptation of a Jamaican
tradition which many years ago was extremely popular
in rural communities. Rival districts would arrange
a cricket match which was preceded and followed
by a range of entertainment activities.
