Similarly, Iwer George's "We Reach"
is a virtual war cry heralding Trinidad's qualification
for the upcoming FIFA World Cup finals.
Ask any "Trini"
and the response will simply be "win, lose
or draw, we reach"!
Mere qualification
in itself, makes up for the disappointment felt
and tears shed when T&T missed out narrowly
on qualifying for the World Cup finals in 1974
and in 1990.
The latter was
especially heartbreaking as on November 19, 1989,
T&T were only one point away from going to
the finals in Italy. All they needed was a draw
at home against the U.S.A., in their last World
Cup qualifier.
Back then,
the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain was
bursting at the seams with 35,000 fans decked
out in red (red, white and black are T&T's
national colours)....
