We can count on writer Patrick Brown and Jambiz Intl. to deliver quality productions that electrify the Jamaican stage. Breadfruit Kingdom, the play currently at Center stage was no exception: a fine comedic masterpiece of social and political ridicule with groovy musical complement. The play is a fictional work, not to be taken seriously but it may step on some politicians’ corns as it alludes to many scandals such as: the Cuban Lightbulb, Trafigura and issues surrounding the extradition. The play looks through a comedic lens on the oppression of the poor by an astute dictator, King Street, played by Glen Campbell, and the gained sensibility of the people which leads to them ousting his reign.
Brown creatively intertwines a fairy tale-like subplot of King Street trying to find a wealthy suitor for his overweight, unattractive daughter, Princess Street (played by Teisha Duncan) and after his unfortunate defeat by the people, she is chosen by a peasant, Slim (played by Volier Johnson) who was previously scoffed when he expressed his sincere love for Princess Street. Camille Davis, playing the captured Queen Street, and Courtney Wilson as Hunchy who was the Queen’s secret lover, complete the main cast.

It was a remarkable and electrifying night on the lawns of Jamaica House; there were performances that dazzled the audience and a slight bamboozling moment. Nonetheless, Shaggy managed to put a smile on the faces of ailing kids who will now be able to benefit from his altruistic initiative.
The show started with a bang as the big man himself, Shaggy oscillated his waist causing the ladies to erupt with excitement. Tarrus Riley then took the lyrical baton and belted out hits that had fans twirling in his blissful harmony. There was a kaleidoscope of brilliant artistry on display as Romain Virgo, Tami Chynn, Wayne Marshall, Tifa, and Future Fambo ambushed the stage successively with hip dancealong tunes. The night was already at a peak and it had just started, patrons could not have asked for any more. Notably, the venue was packed; Shaggy sounded the alarm and Jamaicans rushed to the call, support was overwhelmingly high even in the priciest sections: Gold and Platinum.
