The art of good coaching

Even for individuals possessing a world of talent, there’s a lot to be said about the importance of tapping into one’s full potential in order to achieve success in the sporting arena. Discipline, tactical acumen and the power to self-actualize are key facets for those who strive to be world beaters.

On this path towards winning and consistently dominating opponents, the guidance, motivation and inspiration of a good coach are essential. Bradley Stewart, recognized locally as one of the most proficient football coaches when it comes to technique, emphasized the fact that mastery of the fundamentals, while of great importance, is only a part of the journey.

“At the end of the day it’s what you put out. There are geniuses that come along once in a while, but what you want to do is be prepared in all facets of the game…mental as well as psychological,” stated the National Coordinator for the Jamaica Football Federation, (JFF).

Stewart’s association with football for over four decades would have no doubt made him realize that every player is unique. The challenge of identifying areas in need of improvement and making gradual steps towards addressing them goes hand in hand with understanding an athlete’s skills, potential and personality. The coaches who can get inside a player’s mind are the one’s who truly distinguish themselves and get the optimum performance out of their charges.

“Based on the relationship the coach has with the player, he should be able to provide the right motivation to fire him or her up to give beyond themselves. It’s not just about the physical.”
