Does Power Lead To Corruption?
“Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely,” asserted Lord Acton famously, in his letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton in 1887. Did he articulate a timeless truth, or was he just plain wrong? The anecdotal evidence certainly seems to support his assertion.
Consider the ignominious demise of corporate giants like Enron, the moral quagmire of paedophilia in the Catholic Church, the spectacular downfall of leading televangelists due to financial and sexual corruption or the numerous corruption scandals involving political leaders around the world. Throughout mankind’s history, the evidence is irrefutable. Individuals, groups, companies and nations with power have used it in abusive, discriminatory, self-serving and immoral ways.
This has manifested itself in every sphere of human endeavour. Parents molest children. Male managers sometimes sexually harass their female staff. Nations that are militarily and economically stronger have exploited weaker ones. Journalists sometimes take bribes to promote special interests. This, however, is only half of the story on power.
