Christmas Through The Eyes Of A Child

Christmas is, without a doubt, one of the most celebrated holidays of the year in the Caribbean, and there’s no wonder why this period is particularly a time of great joy and anticipation for children of all ages.

Their innocence allows them to easily become enraptured in the sheer magic of the holiday season. Bright decorative lights, candies, goodies, elaborate feasting, merrymaking and giving and receiving presents all make Christmas a perfect fit for kids. The warm, happy and longlasting memories that are drawn from this holiday period often constitute crucial pillars of a happy childhood, which sets the stage for a happy and well-adjusted adult life in the future.

While the idea of exchanging gifts and celebrating is sure to put an extra special twinkle in their eyes, there is clearly more to Christmas than these things. Christmas is the one time of year when spending time with loved ones and showing them how much you care becomes paramount. Children thrive and blossom in this abundance of togetherness and goodwill, which is the essence of the holiday.

This essence is deeply rooted in the origin and true meaning of Christmas. Some 2000 years have passed since the birth of Jesus Christ, the central figure of Christianity who ultimately sacrificed his earthly life for mankind. It is His birth that is commemorated and exalted at this time, something that often gets lost amidst heavy commercialism. So in light of all that has been mentioned, what do the next generation really think about Christmas? Let’s hear what they have to say about “the most wonderful time of the year”, as seen through the pricelessly pure prism of their innocence.

True Meaning

Conversations with several of the bright-eyed, smiling children who participated in the photo shoot for this story made it more apparent that Christmas is, indeed, the quintessential holiday for kids. In the face of the rampant retail activity and partying that overrun the season, many of the youngsters were still mindful that Jesus Christ is at the centre of the celebration.

“Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus and I really love Jesus,” stated Devonie Grant, an adorable nine-yearold. “Christmas means a lot to me because it is about the birth of Jesus,” added 11-yearold David Nunes.
