Jamaica's Special Olympians On Top Of The World

Not long after a splendid performance by Caribbean athletes at the 2008 Olympics, another chapter has been written in Jamaica’s wonderful sporting history. This time the authors were the 18 members of Jamaica’s team at the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Boise, Idaho, USA. The history makers won five medals - two gold, one silver and two bronze.

Richard Hillary won individual gold in the 200m speed skating, while Monique Brown captured individual silver in the 300m speed skating and two bronze in the 100m and 200m events.

Jamaica's other medal came in the Division Two Floor Hockey competition after the team rallied from 1-6 down to beat Canada 8-7 for gold. This dramatic turnaround won many praises for the team. Lorna Bell, Executive Director of Jamaica Special Olympics, told BUZZZ, “It just shows you the courage, the determination and the reason why we have to work with these people because they show you that it can be done if you really want to do it.”
