Daniel Bailey
Antiguan Targets World Record

Bright, early season performances have made Daniel Bailey of Antigua and Barbuda optimistic enough to be aiming for a world record. The Jamaica-based sprinter said he feels that Maurice Greene’s world indoor 60 metre mark of 6.39 seconds is within his reach. The 22 year-old sprinter’s statement came just after racing double Olympic champion Usain Bolt in a 100 metre race in Jamaica on March 14, 2009.

In that race, staged as part of a meet in Spanish Town, Jamaica, Bailey and Bolt were awarded the same time of 9.93 seconds. The race was wind-aided by a breeze of 2.3 metres per second, just a bit over the allowable limit of 2.0.

The race was a contrast of size and style. The compact Antiguan started fast while the lanky Jamaican raced hard to catch up near the end. The smiling pair had to be separated by the photo finish image which showed Bolt, the double sprint Olympic champion, just ahead.

Scotiabank national netball nursery
A cradle for future champions

They are the future flag bearers of Jamaican netball, and thanks to the financial muscle of banking heavyweights Scotia Bank and the visionaries behind the Jamaica Netball Association (JNA), Jamaica can rest assured of its continued netballing prowess with the establishment of the National Netball Nursery.

Created in 2007, the programme which caters to girls 13 years and younger is being hailed in all quarters as an assertive step to guarantee the nation’s continued dominance of regional and international netball, as it aims to expose youngsters to the fundamentals of the game while at the same time championing their holistic development as individuals.

The programme was designed to impart the basic netballing skills to the participants while making room for lessons to teach important life skills, social graces and academics. Netballing history, rules of the sport, self-endowment, deportment, proper mannerisms and the like are all fixtures on the ‘curriculum’ in this groundbreaking initiative.
