The Sun and Your Skin

Growing up in the Caribbean, you were always told to get out of the house and get some sun, “or you might catch the house colour”! You play in the sun for hours on end, unconcerned and often unaware of the damage it could bring to your skin over time.

By no means is the sun “bad for you”. Vitamin D actually plays an important role in the maintenance of organ systems, but overexposure from the sun’s direct rays can be harmful.

The sun’s rays contain ultraviolet (UV) radiation that can damage your skin. No one is immune to UV rays; men, women and children alike, need to be cautious about the sun and its effects.

Ultraviolet A (UVA) is primarily responsible for premature aging and wrinkles, while Ultraviolet B (UVB), known as the “burning ray”, causes sunburns. Both types can severely damage the skin and cause skin cancer. Most skin cancers occur on parts of the body that are repeatedly exposed to the sun. These areas include the head, neck, face, tips of the ears, hands, forearms, shoulders, back, chests of men, and the back and lower legs of women. That means, you need to take care of all your skin – your face, as well as your entire body.
